TV Series Tag#16: Tyrant

Our next stop is in the Middle East. Tyrant is a story of the Al-Fayeed family in a fictional country, ‘Abuddin,’ where the President is known to be a dictator. Barry Al-Fayeed had exiled himself to the United States, and was living the ‘American’ life as a pediatrician with a wife and two kids, Sammy and Emma. His nephew was getting married and Barry was compelled to go back home with his family. Unfortunately, his father died and his brother Jamal, asked him to stay a little while longer so as to help him set up a ‘new’ government due to the uprising taking place in Abuddin. A lot happened from there.

1. Where does the show rank on your favorites’ list?

Top 30.

2. From 1-10, how obsessed are you?

Maybe a 4.

3. How did you discover the show?

I don’t remember…either I saw the trailer online and decided to watch it or my brother did.

4. What was your initial thought of the show and did it change after watching it?

I thought that the title was interesting. In the beginning, the obvious was Jamal because of his temper and all but a few flashbacks into Barry’s past shows he carries the Al-Fayeed traits.

5. Why do you like the show?

I found it interesting how people are ‘driven’ to take drastic measures in order to keep rowdy people under control and in the process become ‘dictators.’ I wanted to know how different Barry would be coming in with the American mentality of democracy into a world where democracy doesn’t seem to work. Although Barry’s wife pushed him to go to war when he normally wouldn’t because of their daughter’s murder, I wanted to see whether he was the real tyrant but unfortunately the show was cancelled after season 3.

6. Who is your favorite character in the show?

I’d say Leila Al-Fayeed. She was a strong character and Daliyah.

7. Least favorite character in the show?

General Al-Fayeed was so bloodthirsty for war. He wasn’t helpful to Jamal during his troubled reign. Bakri was a thorn in Al-Fayeed’s flesh as well.

8. Favorite villain

Bakri-the guy who was so anti-Al-Fayeed that he was ready to take the country to war so he could be next leader.

9. How would you kill off your favorite character?

Killed by Bakri in a way to wipe out the Al-Fayeed clan; tragic I know.

10. Who is your crush on the show?

Hmmm…let’s go with Barry.

11. If you were to be a character, who would you choose?

Daliyah.

12. Favorite season

Seasons one and three weren’t bad. Don’t remember season 2 so well.

13. Do you follow the cast and show on Twitter and Facebook?

I think I followed the show on Facebook.

14. Which of the characters would you like to meet?

Jamal, Daliyah and Leila.

15. If you could meet any of the actors, who would it be?

The actors who played the characters mentioned.

16. What lesson(s) have you learnt from the show?

I believe most leaders who end up being ‘power drunk’ don’t start up that way. Circumstances push them to make certain decisions which spiral out of control and before they know it, they have become their worst selves.

Leaders should not make national decisions based on personal emotions. It’s dangerous and unwise. Leaders should listen to the people. They are there to serve them after all. Going to war is a loss to both parties as innocent people are the ones who suffer and they achieve nothing.
