Would You Rather #37: Have a Desk job or an Outdoor job?

Some of us love our jobs; others are enduring theirs. Either way, we can’t do without them. Apart from the financial support they give us, they also give us a sense of purpose-a reason to wake up early every day. Some venture into particular industries because it satisfies their temperaments, others do so mainly because of its lucrative appeal.

While others fancy sitting by a desk in an air-conditioned room all day, some love to work outdoors. There is the group who prefer to work in offices with their names nailed to the door; and there’s the other group who prefer not to be confined within four walls. Variety, they say is the spice of life. We all can’t work in the same kind of space, can we?

Why a desk job? Most desk jobs are routine in nature especially the secretarial, cashier and general administrative work. One practically does the same things all day every day except when an unusual situation happens with the network or with a client. When one is able to master his job descriptions, one may not have to really engage his creative senses. It could be comfortable but could also get boring after some time.

What about working outdoors? There’s much activity with this type; one gets to interact with different people at different settings and locations. There’s more exposure and opportunity to network with others across various professions. It’s like working and having fun at the same time. There is less tension on the person to ‘always be on alert’ so as to attract the boss’ watchful eye. One can breathe more freely outside than behind a desk having to put on the strictly professional face from nine to five each day.

Personally, they are both good because they engage one’s senses. The desk job is pretty comfortable unless it is more challenging than the average one. It would fit more easily with my personality. But if I want to push myself a little more, then I’d go for the outdoor job. It would compel me to improve on  my social skills.

Which one do you do? Is it the type you prefer or you wish you were doing the other? Why? Kindly share your thoughts. Always a pleasure to read them.

Well I want to become a psychologist so I would say I’m more comfortable with an indoor job and a controlled environment but I would love to try out an outdoor job too because that sounds really fun 🙂

  2. Outdoor job always! Lol. It is more interesting to meet people and do unconventional jobs. Sitting at one place behind a laptop gives me headaches all the time so that would not be my ideal job

  5. I work in an office. The reason for that is, that I worked at factories for 20 years and I got tired of getting dirty and walking around the whole day. Now, I get to sit down, relax and be comfortable.

I’ll choose outdoor any day. Activity keeps me alive. The last time I was stuck to an indoors job, it was one of the worst times ever. I was reduced to reading newspapers and stuff, because I couldn’t use my laptop due to my sitting position. I’m for outdoor any minute

  8. I love my “desk job”. When you are in corporate, you will do the bulk of the work at your desk since it’s thinking work

I prefer an outdoor job, one where I’m up and about all day. I dislike being confined to a desk, it’s riveting.

I’m a writer so I guess I’m technically a desk person, but I get bored if I am in the same office all day long so my job has to include events and things that will add variety to my day and get me out into the world – and my laptop can go anywhere! I definitely wasn’t meant for the cubicle.

  11. I’ve pretty much always had a desk job, but I live for the outdoors. Constantly torn between the two! The main thing holding me back from being a guide or something like that is because there’s a lot more liability and I don’t want the responsibility of being a WFR.

I would rather a desk job. There desk jobs where you interact with people and are not monotonous. Outside jobs are cool, but the elements can make it challenging.

Currently, my work requires that I spend significant time on my computer, but also demand that I should be flexible and mobile. It works for me because it isn’t rigid and I cab prioritise. I can have an indoor day and an outdoor day. However, if I had to choose, I would definitely go for into because most of my skills relate to indoor activities that I can do on my computer and phone, and I hate running around in my country. The heat and the traffic make it uncomfortable, tiring, time-wasting and frustrating. I like to feel productive, and I just don’t think I would be satisfied being up and about everyday. If I had an office based job, I can clock in and out, but that’s harder to do with an outdoor job (I think).

    Nice piece!

Hello All.Informative post, really like the perspective. Yeah can say that an “Outside” job is liberating to say the least. An office can be become redundant and routine. End result very stale. Fun would be having the freedom of performing a job in open space. You know at a city cafe in morning beginning my work day on a laptop enjoying freshly brewed tea. Really enjoyed reading post, I’ll be checking back in soon!
