Would You Rather #37: Have a Desk job or an Outdoor job?

Some of us love our jobs; others are enduring theirs. Either way, we can’t do without them. Apart from the financial support they give us, they also give us a sense of purpose-a reason to wake up early every day. Some venture into particular industries because it satisfies their temperaments, others do so mainly because of its lucrative appeal.

While others fancy sitting by a desk in an air-conditioned room all day, some love to work outdoors. There is the group who prefer to work in offices with their names nailed to the door; and there’s the other group who prefer not to be confined within four walls. Variety, they say is the spice of life. We all can’t work in the same kind of space, can we?

Why a desk job? Most desk jobs are routine in nature especially the secretarial, cashier and general administrative work. One practically does the same things all day every day except when an unusual situation happens with the network or with a client. When one is able to master his job descriptions, one may not have to really engage his creative senses. It could be comfortable but could also get boring after some time.

What about working outdoors? There’s much activity with this type; one gets to interact with different people at different settings and locations. There’s more exposure and opportunity to network with others across various professions. It’s like working and having fun at the same time. There is less tension on the person to ‘always be on alert’ so as to attract the boss’ watchful eye. One can breathe more freely outside than behind a desk having to put on the strictly professional face from nine to five each day.

Personally, they are both good because they engage one’s senses. The desk job is pretty comfortable unless it is more challenging than the average one. It would fit more easily with my personality. But if I want to push myself a little more, then I’d go for the outdoor job. It would compel me to improve on  my social skills.
