O for Opportunity

Opportunity comes but once, they say. But I believe one can have more than one chance of making something work. Opportunities are good news to people looking for them. A job hunter who sees the words, ‘Job vacancy/opportunity’ or ‘workers wanted’ feels elated because it is another opening for him to try his luck. But at times, opportunities don’t manifest themselves that plainly. Sometimes, they come clouded and present themselves as challenges. And the wise face them and use them to their advantage.

Everyone who ever invented something did so because of a challenge that needed to be resolved. And in the face of that challenge, saw an opportunity to make a difference. It takes the bold and daring to pursue that opportunity in spite of everyone around them saying it’s impossible and a waste of time. It might not work the first time or the first couple of times but with persistence and determination, out of some huge challenges were born some invented necessities of our time.

But it is sad that some people flee when opportunities come knocking on their door because they come under the guise of challenges. People erroneously think challenges come to make their lives harder so instead of facing them, they bolt. But challenges come to make us stronger and when we are able to overcome them, they make us better. It is extremely pitiful that most people can’t seem to make their marriages work these days. Six, ten, fifteen, twenty months into the marriage and they are already calling it quits. The most popular reason given is ‘due to irreconcilable differences.’

If only couples would see marital issues as opportunities to see the loopholes, work on them to make their bond stronger and not an excuse to sign the papers and part ways…many broken homes would be growing strong up to this day. Every well-resolved conflict brings the parties closer together because they would have learnt something new about each other and managed to deal with it without destroying their bond-a big plus to their interpersonal resume.

Whenever we face a challenge as individuals, couples, institutions and even as nations, we should see it as an opportunity to make a difference and create something new; not a nuisance to do away with. Not every opportunity comes announcing itself as such; some have to be extracted from unassuming situations like gold out of its ore.

So whatever challenge you might be facing at home, school or work, seek out the opportunity in it and seize it. At the end of the day, you would have been able to resolve the issue and then be a creator of something significant.

Have a great week, everyone!
