When I first read the question, I thought to myself: this should be easy. I’d pick the baby! After all, it’s just 24 hours, right? It should be more bearable than seven whole days with someone I can’t stand. But rushing to make such a decision is underestimating what a bad hat a baby can be when it makes its mind to make your day a miserable one. At least for the houseguest, he can clean after himself and I wouldn’t have to keep an eye out for him every minute.
But for anyone who has had to babysit an infant before, you’d agree calling it ‘hectic’ is a grave understatement! Even when the babe is the cooperative type, the chore can still be exhausting. It starts with the baby ‘getting to know you’ and ‘deciding whether he/she’d like you to handle him/her. If the ‘audition’ goes in your favor, then good for you! You’ll end the day feeling like you want to have your own baby. But if you fail the test, prepare for all hell to break loose! You think you’d have the upper hand because you’re older? An angry wailing infant will prove you wrong in a shocking way.
About the unwanted houseguest, well, it kind of depends of how ‘unwanted’ he or she is. Is it the judgmental mother-in-law type of guest who would be watching your every move with suspicious eyes? Or is it the friend who needs a place to crash for a few days; whose presence is barely felt the entire time? If it’s the former, I’d trade it for the most difficult infant in the world for the dreaded 24 hours! But it’s the latter, I think I’ll prefer him to the crying infant.
Trying to keep your cool with a non-stop crying baby coupled with changing diapers, feeding, trying to make him sleep is a skill that cannot be picked up from a textbook. It would take hard-earned practice to master that. And someway somehow, a day with a crying baby never seems to end. The seconds take their sweet time to tick away and the hours drag their feet as if they feel lazy to pass. Every sense of eternity equals five minutes on the clock. Could a crying toothless baby make you hallucinate to the point that 24 hours seem like a week? I’d say it’s possible.
On the other hand, does the guest make you feel uncomfortable to the point that you decide to go grocery shopping and spend unnecessarily longer time doing so just so you can have some breathing room? Does he need help with everything? Does she have a comment to make on everything is being said on TV? Or does she point out how you’re doing everything wrong with the meal you’re preparing?
Always barging into your space and then giving you a sly mock of an apology? There are a lot of irritating possibilities in order to tag a guest as ‘unwanted.’ The higher the degree, the more likely babysitting a crying infant would sound like a more tolerable headache to bear.
For me, a day sounds better than a week considering that both parties are difficult people. An adult could be as exasperating as a baby. It depends on how high your tolerance level can get. If the guest is as ‘unwanted’ as the word suggests, I’d rather babysit.
Which one do you find more or less tolerable? Kindly drop in your comments. It’s always a pleasure to read your thoughts!

Considering my daughter was born colic, I’d easily take one day with a crying infant over a week of living with difficult people any day! Her crying never even bothered me… But, perhaps it’s because she wasn’t someone else’s baby either, lol!

Haha…. Sure, your own baby wouldn’t feel so burdensome like someone else’s. Thanks for sharing, Jessie! 👍

Picking the crying infant anyday. I don’t think I want to deal with unwanted guest because they will frustrate me with everything they do. The crying infant? Well he’s an infant. Typical of them to wail all day but also good moments come from being with them. So yes I’m babysitting. 😊

Unwanted guest for sure. I like to think I’ve mastered the art of ignoring ppl (I’m not proud of this btw..well sometimes) so I can pretend this unwanted guest isn’t around. Something I cannot do with an infant, especially a crying one. In December I had to watch my niece who is 2 for 6 hours, I cried and had to cut short the babysitting time.

I think I’m good at ignoring people too… Sounds like a good plan. As for a crying baby, Hmmm…. Thanks for passing by, Shereen☺

I’d pick the crying baby. I don’t know how come but babies like me, or so I think and I love having them around. I’m also very good at ignoring people but trust me, there are some adults who can be a thorn in the flesh. My mother has this friend who can nag and complain like crazy and I always lock myself in my room anytime she comes around but she always finds a way of getting to me to piss me off. Imagine living with someone like her for a week. It’ll be a disaster.

Goodness, definitely a crying baby!! I don’t like sharing my space with friends for a night, I can’t imagine an unwanted guest. I have my own baby and she cried a lot (getting better as she gets older) and while the day feels very long, at least it’s over and things go back to normal quickly.

The crying baby…I find it sometimes fun to see these innocent babies crying. Different pitch and sounds like musical instruments.. Some can be unbearable but better than an Unwanted guest.

hmmm I cant deal with crying babies, hang on a second can this crying baby does he/she talk yet? I might consider it if the baby talks or when the world invents something which lets you know what the baby is thinking, Its really really hard to communicate with someone whose only means of communication is crying, trying to figure out do they need, feeding, bathing, to be burped, changing maybe they just want to sleep, but why is it so hard to hard to sleep must it be a soap opera of singing off-key and rocking and hitting head on ground asking myself why I possibly thought I could survive 24 hours with a crying baby (maybe casue I dont have one of mine yet)
Option 2: An unwanted guest isnt that like dealing with someone who is sulking at you, you dont even have to make conversation just walk around with headphones, curl up with book on the couch, with the remote control and movies and boom week over, just like that, as long as they;
leave my stuff alone, dont touch nothing without asking, and not squeeze the toothpaste in the middle and just generally clean up after themselves I think I could go a week, unless of course the wanted guest is someone I hate like that back stabbing snake who said they were my bestfriend …..

Well, it stated an infant which means he can’t talk so it is up to you to determine what is bothering him whenever he cries… As for unwanted, it depends on however you interpret it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Beaton👍

in that case I would pick the unwanted guest 🙂

I prefer crying babies. they have a way of honing your musical talents. You have no idea the songs you can compose until you babysit a crying baby.

lol what do you mean by unwanted house guests? I mean if they don’t talk to me and I don’t talk to them, I think I can put up with them for a month

Am answering before reading this time! Baby sit! At least it’s just 24 hours of torture… and you can’t be mad at a child. But the houseguest… God help us!

Yep, I think so too. 24 hours of torture vrs a whole week with an adult… The baby sounds more bearable.
