Advocacy sounds cool; at least to me. It has this responsible tone to it; has a bold stance and a selfless ring to it. Being an advocate simply means supporting a cause. And there are a variety of causes to choose from.
Obviously, we won’t always agree with the cause of choice of others and I guess that’s what makes us different and the world interesting.
As a human who cares about the planet we dwell on, the least we could do is to ensure we keep the earth in good shape – for own good and that of generations yet to come.
If you believe animals are incredible creatures who also deserve a place on this earth, then you would definitely be against animal cruelty.
If you believe that all persons need to be remunerated based on merit and not on gender, then you would advocate for equal pay and be against discrimination of any kind.
If you believe that the voice of the people has to be heard and their views respected and attended to; then you would rally for freedom of expression, press freedom and the like.
If you believe in the rule of law, then you would be an advocate for justice.
We all believe in something; hence there is always something to stand for. Regardless of whether you’re religious or not, we were all created for something. None of us was made just to waltz through the earth with nothing to offer and yet every opportunity to mess it up.
At least believe in something and be willing to stand up for it. You might not see all the changes you’d like in your lifetime, but you can be rest assured that your effort will contribute to a better place for unborn generations.
Be responsible. Be concerned. Be proactive. Be and advocate.
