TV Series Tag #63: The Morning Show

I’m excited to bring you this week’s TV series! The Morning Show is an explosive revelation into the toxic culture at the biggest daytime news show in the States, highlighting sexual misconduct, complicity and victim silencing. The Morning Show streams on Apple TV+.

1.            Where would you rank it among your favorite shows?

Top 50.

2.            From 1-10, how obsessed are you?

Considering the fact that I watched the entire season in a day, I’ll rate myself at 9.

3.            How did you discover the show?

I saw the trailer on YouTube and a colleague also recommended it.

4.            What was your initial thought of the show and did it change after watching it?

Initially, I thought it would be a version of Being Mary Jane – power struggle for the coveted anchor seat of the biggest morning show on television. But this was deeper as it didn’t center on a particular character but exposed a subtle yet suffocating culture among staff in a television studio.

  5.  Why do you like the show?

I love the show because the storytelling is amazing.  The cast brought their A game and the suspense was off the roof!

  6. Favorite episode?

That would be episode 8. Mitch Kessler was outed in episode 1 and although each subsequent one referred to the amazing onscreen chemistry with Alex Levy, I wanted to see that for myself and I’m glad I got the opportunity from a flashback episode.

7. Favorite characters?

Alex Levy – she knows how to hold her own. Although most of her actions were self-centered, she plays her role really well.

Bradley Jackson – the rough cut diamond. She is passionate about her work and doesn’t know how to play sweet and nice just for the numbers. Could be termed a bit self-destructive but that’s who she is.

Mitch Kessler – the beloved golden boy until he wasn’t. He’s smooth, I’ll give him that. He knows how to wield the power he has to get what he wants.

Charlie Black – a really good supervisor who goes out of his way to make Alex comfortable and happy.

  8.  Who is your crush on the show?

Mitch Kessler. I think this is the first time I’ve seen Steve Carell play a serious non-comedic role and he killed it!

  9. If you were to be a character, who would you choose?

That’s quite difficult. Although all the female characters showed strength in certain areas, they were also equally flawed in others.

10. Do you follow the show on Facebook and Twitter?

I follow the show on Facebook.

11. Which of the characters would you like to meet?

Hannah, Mia, Chip, Cory.

12. What lesson(s) have you learnt from the show?

Sexual misconduct is all around us. And sometimes the worst part is when colleagues around you somehow know what is going on and conveniently excuse it or turn a blind eye to it leaving the victims out in the cold. Complicity is as bad as being active participant in an inappropriate work relationship. For those who cover it up because the culprit is their golden goose are equally to blame for enabling such misconduct. The trauma for victims could be overwhelming and even suicidal. Speaking out could cost you the job or some benefits but nothing beats telling the truth and freeing yourself of holding it in. For every culprit engaged in sexually assaulting subordinates or helping to cover it up, there is always a day of reckoning.
