TV Series Tag #53: Peaky Blinders

Oi! Our next stop is at Birmingham set in the early 1900s. Peaky Blinders is a British period crime drama series which tells the story of a gangster family called the Shelbys following World War I. This family is loosely based on a real 19th century urban young gang of the same name. The family led by Thomas Shelby has to face off with other gangs and deal with issues that come with change and expansion.

  1. Where would you rank it among your favorite shows?

I’d place it in my top 50.

2.            From 1-10, how obsessed are you?

I’d rate myself at 7. The characters are really fun and intriguing to watch.

3.            How did you discover the show?

My sister was watching it and said it was worth the watch. So I took her word for it and watched.

4.            What was your initial thought of the show and did it change after watching it?

I found it pretty interesting especially with the setting. I found the accent quite heavy initially but as I kept watching, I got used to it so I began to enjoy the show. I figured it would just be about violence and a dysfunctional family but as the story unfolded, I realized it was more than that.

5.            Why do you like the show?

I love the show because of how the characters evolve with each season. It shows the innate desire of a gangster to go legit and keep his family safe.

6.            Who are your favorite characters?

Tommy Shelby, of course! He’s very calculated and strategic. Every relationship he forges is part of his grand plan to take Shelby Company Ltd to the next level. He’s been hardened and scarred by the war no doubt; but he still has a soft spot for family.

Polly Gray (nee Shelby) – Her feminine presence is an essential part of the Shelby organization. She does her best to keep the boys grounded and her loyalty is unwavering.

Arthur Shelby – the eldest and hotheaded brother. Must have been the war but he’s pretty messed up and that makes him fatally dangerous. Doesn’t take him long to waste someone’s life.

John Shelby – also very rough around the edges but very committed to his brothers.

Ada Shelby – was quite annoying in the beginning, being in love with a communist and all but after he died, she rejoined the family which strengthens the female hold in the family.

Michael Gray – son of Aunt Polly. Seems to show some potential in taking over from Thomas.

Grace Burgess– The love of Thomas Shelby’s life.

Alfie Solomons – Not too sure about whether I like him or not. I find the way he speaks amusing and sometimes get confused about whose side he’s on.

7.            Least favorite character

Chief Inspector Campbell! One disgusting fellow! He was definitely a double-crossing, cruel man who was a painful thorn in the sides of the Shelbys.

Linda and Esme – Wives of Arthur and John Shelby – I know they mean well for their husbands by wanting them to break away from Thomas and focus on their families but their lack of understanding of Thomas’ vision for the family is pathetic.

8.            Who is your crush on the show?

Since it’s a story about gangsters, sometimes it’s hard to see the sweet side of the characters. Maybe Thomas.

9.            If you were to be a character, who would you choose?

Would have said Aunt Pol but her choice of men are a minus to me. Maybe Ada.

10.          Favorite season

I’ve enjoyed all seasons. Quite hard to pinpoint one.

11. Favorite episode

Season 3 episode 1 – the famous ‘No Fighting!’ scene where Thomas beseeches the boys to behave so as not to embarrass his bride Grace on his wedding day.

12.          Do you follow the cast and show on Facebook and Twitter?

I follow the show on Facebook and check out the official and fan pages on Instagram.

13.          Which of the characters would you like to meet?

Thomas, Arthur, Pol, Alfie.

14.          If you could meet any of the actors, who would it be?

Cillian Murphy who plays Thomas Shelby and Paul Anderson who plays Arthur Shelby.

15.          What lesson(s) have you learnt from the show?

For every action you take, there are consequences. At the end of the day, after you’ve amassed all the money, contacts, power and influence, nothing beats the love and support of family. Being strategic in business relationships goes a long way.
