TV Series Tag #42: Medici: Masters of Florence

Ciao amici miei! Our next stop is at Italy, the country of love as it is called. This Netflix original series delves into the lives of the wealthy Medici family during great unstable times throughout medieval Italy. It is set in 15th century Florence and revolves around Cosimo de’ Medici who succeeds his father Giovanni de Bicci de’ Medici who died mysteriously. The Medici family has to deal with rival Abizzi family and then the Pazzi family afterwards.

1. Where would you rank it among your favorite shows?
I’d place it in my top 30.

2. From 1-10, how obsessed are you?
I’d rate myself at 8. A mysterious death opening the show was enough to get me hooked.

3. How did you discover the show?
I think I found it on a friend’s external drive as I was transferring some series on it for her. When I found out that Richard Madden was starring in it, I decided I was going to watch it.

4. What was your initial thought of the show and did it change after watching it?
I found it refreshingly different from what I’ve been watching so far especially with the setting. With the flashbacks with Giovanni and his two sons, Cosimo and Lorenzo, it provided the needed insight into the story and made the present scenes make much more sense.

5. Why do you like the show?
I like the show because it’s about power and as I stated in an earlier entry, power makes for good drama. I love the how family, politics and religion intertwine and the cards each part play to wield control.

6. Who’s your favorite character?
Cosimo de’ Medici. He had a head for playing politics to his advantage.

7. Least favorite character
Rinaldo Abizzi. He was hell bent on destroying the Medicis and though the back story explained the reason for his hatred, I felt he should have let go when Cosimo wanted to make peace. He was tricked into betraying Rinaldo and he should have listened to Cosimo’s side of the story and forgiven him. But I wasn’t sad by his end though. Some troubles are better eliminated than controlled.

8. Who is your crush on the show?
Cosimo for sure!

9. If you were to be a character, who would you choose?
That would be Contessina de’ Bardi. She was loyal to Cosimo even when he wasn’t. Although they both entered into the marriage reluctantly, she made an effort to love and support her husband.

10. Favorite season
I’m yet to watch the second part – Medici the Magnificent which fastforwards 20 years into Cosimo’s grandson’s life. Although I’m sad I won’t get to see Cosimo again, I can’t wait to watch season 2.

11. Do you follow the cast and show on Facebook and Twitter?
No, I don’t. Will do so.

12. Which of the characters would you like to meet?
Cosimo and Lorenzo de’ Medici.

13. If you could meet any of the actors, who would it be?
Richard Madden.

14. What lesson(s) have you learnt from the show?
You have to be shrewd to survive politics. Some players will definitely play dirty but you still need to keep a cool head so as to not get blinded by the thirst for revenge. It is not right for parents to dictate what their children should do with their lives. It messes them up and could tend to be a cycle.
