TV Series Tag #35: How to Get Away with Murder

Want to be a lawyer? Well, depending on what you want to specialize in, you should know it’s not all that glamorous, arguing in court, winning cases and making partner. This show delves into the life of Annalise Keating; a brilliant, fierce and charismatic defense law professor as well as a defense attorney. It all starts with her recruiting in her best in her class (Wes, Laurel, Michaela, Connor and Asher) to assist her with cases at her firm alongside her two trustworthy and discreet employees, Frank Delfino and Bonnie Winterbottom who is also an associate attorney. Mysterious death happens which test each person’s rational and moral limits and reveal dark truths about everyone involved.

1. Where would you rank it among your favorite shows?
I’d place it in my top 30.

2. From 1-10, how obsessed are you?

I’d rate myself at 7. Each season starts with a mystery and once it kicks in, you know you’re in for a ride till the end.

3. How did you discover the show?

I found the trailer on Facebook and YouTube and upon seeing that this was another show from Shondaland, I knew it would be a good show. Get to see another badass woman like Olivia Pope in the courtroom? Yes please!

4. What was your initial thought of the show and did it change after watching it?
I loved the flash forward at the beginning and end of the first episode and how the story develops in the middle. It gives the mind something to ponder over as you try to put the pieces together and figure out the puzzle before the last episode. I got more intrigued as more flesh was being put on the skeleton and yet not having a clue about how it ends the way it does.

5. Why do you like the show?
I like the show because it’s not predictable. It can lead you on withsome clues and just when you thought it got it all figured out, there’s a twist you didn’t see coming which changes everything.

6. Who’s your favorite character(s)?

Annalise Keating – She’s not perfect of course; she’s far from it but her stance not to back down from a fight is a trait I find admiring. I love that in season 5, she’s devoted to freeing innocent people who have been given unfair hearings and sentences. She’s on a mission to clean up the justice system.

Frank – he’s rough around the edges but his loyalty to Annalise is unquestionable. For me, loyalty is an admirable trait so yeah, he’s my guy.
Bonnie – She has quite a dark past so she’s messed up in some proportions but she’s a good sidekick. She almost had a chance of happily-ever-after in season 5 but for the sake of the ‘team’, she had to do the one thing I know she would never forgive herself for.

Michaela – She’s ambitious, I’ll give her that. Sometimes she goes overboard and gets annoying but she cares for those close to her.

Connor – He has a good heart but he easily doubts Annalise’s intentions. He clashes with her from time to time but it’s obvious Annalise has him close to her heart.

Laura – She’s nosy and can be fierce sometimes. She sometimes seems indecisive to me.

Asher – the amusing one in the group. He’s always the outsider in the ‘inner circle’.

Nate Lahey – he has an interesting relationship with Annalise. She messes with him from time to time when it suits her but he has her back almost always. Could it be love?

Wes – He had a good heart; no wonder Annalise had a soft spot for him.

7. Least favorite character
Each season has a bad person the team has to confront and he/she is my least favorite character of the moment, most of the time.

8. Who is your crush on the show?
It used to be Wes…now, I don’t think I have one.

9. If you were to be a character, who would you choose?

I’d like to say Annalise but her alcohol problem makes her less admirable. Michaela makes questionable choices sometimes. Bonnie is too messed up emotionally. Wow, this is difficult.

10. Favorite season

All seasons have been interesting to atch. Don’t remember all but I remember particularly loving season 1.

11. Do you follow the cast and show on Facebook and Twitter?

I follow the show on Facebook.

12. Which of the characters would you like to meet?

Annalise Keating and Tegan Price (she comes in season 4 and 5).

13. If you could meet any of the actors, who would it be?

Viola Davis.

14. What lesson(s) have you learnt from the show?
Most things are not black and white; they are varying shades of grey in between. If your gut tells you something is wrong, it usually is. Sometimes we are pushed to cover up something for the sake of the group we find ourselves in but in the end, we get damaged emotionally and always filled with guilt. Some friendships are bound by common interests; others by secrets. Be careful which cliques you crave to join.

I tried to follow this series, but I just couldn’t. The whole concept (starting with the title) just seemed wrong, I didn’t really know where it was going or the point. And in Season One, there was quite a bit of homosexual content (explicit too!) which was a huge turn off for me. So, I decided that I didn’t like the show. I may give it another try…but if that was your favourite season, maybe I’m not missing anything.
