TV Series Tag #31: Ray Donovan

Heya! It feels good to be back. I’m taking you into the life of an Irish-American family, a multi-level dysfunctional one at that called the Donovans. We have Ray Donovan who is a fixer (remember Olivia Pope?) with his brothers Terry, a former boxer who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, Bunchy who identifies himself as a sexual anorexic and Daryll, a half-brother. Then there is Mickey Donovan, their father.

Ray is a devoted family man but his jobs are always shady. Think of any dirty business that need cleaning up and Ray is the right man for the job with his able people Avi and Lena. He’s comfortably married to Abby with two kids: Bridget and Conor.

  1.  Where would you rank it among your favorite shows?

Top 40. I’ve had my fair share of amusement and unbelief from watching the show.

2. From 1-10, how obsessed are you?

5 – not too much but not too low to suggest disinterest.

3. How did you discover the show?

Don’t really remember. If it wasn’t my brother then I chanced upon it and decided to check it out.

    4. What was your initial thought of the show and did it change after watching it?

My initial thought is that of watching a hard guy from a typical dysfunctional family trying to fix other people’s problems and yet struggling to fix his own. It didn’t change much but the level of dysfunctionality increasing with each season didn’t cease to amaze me.

        5.  Why do you like the show?

I love the show because it offers a glimpse of what seemingly powerful or rich people deal and get away with because of their connections. I also like seeing how Ray manages to be there for his family no matter how messed up his assignment get (they are always messed up).

        6. Who’s your favorite character?

Ray Donovan! He has a good heart but he’s one tough guy, rough around the edges and has no qualms about getting his hands dirty.

        7. Least favorite character?

Mickey Donovan – Ray’s father. I dislike him but I also anticipate seeing him on screen. He’s always giving Ray one headache after the other. Of all bad fathers, I think he’s the worst. He’s shady and sometimes selfish; he never considers who he’s dragging down with him as long as he gets what he wants.

        8. Who is your crush on the show?

      Don’t have one.

        9. If you were to be a character, who would you choose?

That’s difficult. My first instinct would be to choose Abby – Ray’s wife because she’s definitely a ride or die chick. But I lost my love for her when she went all out to cheat on Ray with some dude – was he a cop? I don’t even remember. But that aside, she wasn’t bad.

As for Bridget, Ray’s daughter, I just dislike her character. She’s silly on so many levels. I don’t know what her character has to prove.

      10.    Favorite season

That’s hard. I can’t point to any particular one but I’ve enjoyed watching the show in general.

      11.  Do you follow the cast and show on Facebook and Twitter?

I follow the show on Facebook.

      12. Which of the characters would you like to meet?

      Ray and Mickey Donovan.

      13. What lesson(s) have you learnt from the show?

Family is family is family…no matter how dysfunctional it is. It’s something we all possess but didn’t have to buy off a shelf. The rich and powerful in society are not necessarily the happiest. Every little misconduct could turn out to be a huge scandal and they always fall on fixers to clean up their mess. No job is bigger than family. Contracts will come and go. Family always remains.
