Apparently, some Christians feel left out of the ‘fun’ that their secular friends are having and are contemplating opening a ‘Christian-like’ nightclub-no alcohol or secular music, just gospel music and soft drinks on church basis.
I heard this question on a radio show and I couldn’t help but wonder where the idea even came from. Are Christian youth feeling too bored these days that we have to imitate the world’s form of entertainment to keep busy? What next, pool parties for the church youth during Easter?
Believers are missionaries-we are to go into the world to tell people the Good News that God loved us so much that He sent His only Son to come and die in our place for our redemption. He is risen with arms wide open, ready to receive anyone who comes to Him-a task most of us are doing a lackadaisical job at. We are to let our light so shine before men that people will see our good works and give glory to God in heaven and what do we see today? It’s actually a puzzle set at ‘difficult level’ to recognize some people as Christians. They talk, dress and live just like unbelievers and yet would identify themselves as active members in their churches. Instead of being called the children of the Light, all sorts of unpleasant names are being used to describe us-hypocrites being the cleanest of them.
But yet, God remains faithful and gracious to us. Instead of shedding off our lukewarm attitudes and going all out for God just as he did and continues to do for us, here we are considering setting up nightclubs!
I’m not against Christians hanging out, listening to music and bonding. It’s great. I’m just not enthused about the ‘nightclub’ tag. The truth is, some of the Christians we have among us are already half-baked with funny understandings of Biblical principles and questionable lifestyles and philosophies. Interestingly, they have the luring power to draw conservative folks over to their side. Give them a platform like a ‘Christian nightclub’ and only God knows where that would lead the youth.
One caller into the radio show said we already have a nightclub called ‘All Night Service’ where we sing, pray and fellowship and I couldn’t agree more with her. If church youth leaders think their members are not showing interest in their programs, then they should find more creative ways to do that by including them in drawing the programs and encouraging them to take charge of certain things. But a ‘nightclub’?
I do want to believe that the idea came from a well-intentioned heart but let’s not give the devil a leeway to adulterate our way of worship. My two cents.
What do you think? If you share a different opinion, kindly do share and let’s think it through together.

I would agree with the latter part…all night services. And really are we bored? hmmmmmm…..I choose to call it church activity fatigue. lots of churches having so many activities to keep members in and expect them to be there all through out. It seems it gets monotonous, boring and creates fatigue, so our church leaders should also check this and not let people feel guilty if for genuine they miss out on a church activity or 2.

I agree… Sometimes the activities become too much and monotonous. Churches need to go back to the drawing board. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Grace.

Awesome post, Josey!…. a ‘night club’ for Christians in my view … is about entering into worship & praise. God’s Kingdom is not of this world, never will be, and neither should we be. When Jesus first rescued me, I felt a longing to go and bring his light into dark places like night clubs, but I realized once I went back that I no longer belonged. God had better places and whole new realms of His glory and there was just NO going back…and no desire to. This world grows strangely dim in the light of His glory. Then, suddenly you find yourself ‘dancing’ like you never danced before…See Bethel Music: Ever Be with Kalley Heiligenthal — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byEUIzfVLAs

Finally been able to read it… Not really sure where I stand on this issue actually. I’d like to read the argument for the idea. Maybe it will shed more light into their perspective.

I understand the heart behind the idea really. Christianity has become ‘boring’ – a monotonous cycle of church activities with a list of dos and don’ts. Before
I go on I am not against chilling – I personally like to go out and especially treat myself!
The solution though in my opinion is to live Christianity as a lifestyle. In everything you do, glorify God – whether its eating, sleeping, hanging out with your friends, throwing a party or even sex. That way we won’t start looking for ways to ‘enjoy’ Christianity.
Last thing – your midnight hours are precious. Instead of sacrificing them for just ‘meaningless’ dancing and drinking (since this is the basic idea of a nightclub), why not invest them into speaking over your future or building yourself up in the word and prayer. Invest them into your spiritual growth.
May the Lord help us to develop our relationship with Him and apply wisdom in all we do.
Amen.

Although I think a “Christian” nightclub is an interesting idea; for me, the only problem with it is the word “nightclub” which today; is generally associated with sexular music and the things that bring us pleasure.
But, personally, we as Christians shouldn’t even need a nightclub to hang out because we are all brothers and siters in Christ and are called to be so much more.
Like you said, “Believers are missionaries-we are to go into the world to tell people the Good News that God loved us so much that He sent His only Son to come and die in our place for our redemption”. We don’t need a “club” to go out and express ourselves.
God is calling us to be witnesses and leaders.

For me* it totally depends who it is lead by, if it is lead in the spirit it would work can never underestimate the power of God and a new way in which it can appearbut by the name itself it could draw people from the world to God, but then at the same time Gods spirit has to be at a high level in that place to make the world see that is the void they need to fill their hearts with. whereas if this place is lead in the flesh its going to be a duplicate of the world and no one will see the true lifestyle of a christian is separate from the fleshy ways of lust an all that entangles itself with it. can only work if God spirit is all over that place and is lead by holy spirit in all areas.

A nightclub without alcohol and playing gospel music… Sounds like a terrible idea. If we keep trying to create subcultures all we will accomplish is separating ourselves from the world. Which is the polar opposite of what Jesus said. Maybe Christians should go into actual nightclubs and start building relationships without being weird or creepy.

When you say for into nightclubs and building relationships, what exactly do you mean?

I mean going to where people are, rather then building a place that is separate for Christians only. I believe Christians are not supposed to isolate themselves from the world. Rather go into the world, meet people, talk to them, and show them God’s love. So maybe going into a nightclub would be a good place to start.

You have a point but I doubt talking to people in a nightclub environment would be effective. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jeffrey

Having grown up and ministered in primarily Baptist churches, after 40 years I realized that what kept me out of nightclubs or made me feel like I was doing something wrong by going out dancing was my fear of other Christian’s perceptions of me, not God Himself. I love dancing, music, being around a variety of people (personal preference), having fun, provoking deep conversations but am the same person at church on Sunday, at ladies’ craft nights, Bible studies, the local pub or neighborhood bunko. This is what I consider personal integrity. It’s hard to say what is ‘effective’ for Kingdom purposes as we serve boundless and mighty God. All people hunger for hope and something better in life. Witnessing a person who has a spirit of joy yet propriety intact within a nightclub setting may just breathe life, hope, and curiosity into someone whos’ faith has been shattered by a the ever waning religious institution called ‘church’. If church is the people and not a building then I’m all for taking the church into the nightclubs instead of turning a local church into one. Of course, everyone’s mission field is different and what may work ‘effectively’ for some, may not be ‘effective’ for others. Praise God the work has already been accomplished and we are His chosen Ambassadors…

I don’t have a problem with a place for Christians to meet for entertainment whether it is a nightclub or something else. I was never part of the secular nightclub scene, but others are very comfortable. Some people suggest all night prayer meetings or maybe church every day, but that is unrealistic. We may have a spirit, but we also have a body and a soul. We cannot deny the need for fellowship. We should not ignore our thirst for friendships and entertainment. However, we do need to choose those wisely. Similar to what Jeffrey said, I believe we should go where the world is and meet people. It is hard to win people to Jesus is you are always praying or going to church and not meeting people who need Jesus. That being said, we also need strong Christians to help strengthen us in our faith.

A lot of interesting thoughts here. I personally think night clubs is going a little too far. If there’s anything I’m sure Christians are to do, it is to be the pioneers in making and bringing change to the world. Not copying what the world does and putting a Christian tag on it. We really need to watch tags, cause they are the very things that draw us away from God.

I think labelling something as christian night club would make us appear to be exclusive. How can we share the good news about Christ if we are creating a kind of VIP environment by allowing this? Very well written post, thank you. God bless you

What do I think about a Nightclub for Christians? Thumbs down. This concept sounds like a slippery-slope. There is no neutral ground here. We are to be conformed to the image of Christ not the world. We are in the world but not of the world. Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world.” And again the Word instructs us: “Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4).

Interesting read. It’s funny but earlier today I was actually thinking about a way/place for more christians to get together and have fun. The nightclub idea crossed my mind, but like you said, I could see how that could lead to some negative decisions from the people attending this so called “club”. What ever happened to good ole “Potlucks” at least there you get fed as well;). God bless you

I like the idea. Am actually strongly considering opening it.
With all sorts of activities. Mondays night can be poetry night. Saturday mornings book club. Friday koreokee.
The fact we missionary Evangelist etc doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. What a refreshing way to have fun listening to gospel with Christians across all churches

I’m not sure if night club is what I would call something like this a club any way but you are right we have become a slothful generation. I do think many thought the Jesus people movement was dangerous and all that hippie music long hair and “evil” rock music. A lot of people were saved, and chuck Smith became a spiritual father to many believers because of faith in God and not gimmicks. That’s where the answer is if it is a gimmick or passion.

I think the bigger problem is christians constantly alienating themselves from the world. Matt Chandlers says “if all your friends look like you, go get new friends.”
We are not called to hide from the world in our own clubs, but to show Jesus to the world. Jesus himself went to where the unbelievers were. He didn’t go hang with the church, He took the church with him wherever He went. That’s not to say we need to act just like the world so we fit in, but this level of separation needs to stop. It’s hypocritical of what we are called to do!!! Good article, thanks for sharing!!

Hi. Good post. I understand that people grow tired and bored of church. My dad started a ‘cafe’ after church before, where people can drink coffee, chill and sing. But nightclub?? That’s something else. There’s lots more of activities you can do — outreach, feeding the poor, etc. I hope people can see that instead of the idea of nightclub.

To be honest I don’t think there is nothing wrong going to a night club at all.
Just don’t why it has to be titled “Christian nightclub”?
Why can’t a christian go to a regular nightclub.
Just like the online dating site christian mingle, I don’t understand why they would have a separate dating site just for Christians. It’s like they are isolating Christians from the rest of the world.
Joining a dating site or attending a night club is not sacrilegious to me at all I just don’t see why it’s labeled “Christian Club”.
Christians should just go to a regular club.
I don’t like the idea of christian club.

A Christian Night club is an oxymoron. You’re right, we need to come out of the world. We have an awesome all night worship service at our church and it gives younger Christians somewhere to go and something to do on Friday night. It’s transformative.
