Would You Rather #72: Snitch on your Best Friend for a Crime he committed or Go to jail for a Crime your Best Friend committed?

There are friends we hang out with at social events, and there are friends who have become family. To some, the concept of a best friend is overrated; to others, to be called someone’s best friend is a great honor and responsibility to be there for another and be honest and loyal.

To some, besties mean your ride and die chick, the type ascribing to blind loyalty without asking questions. To others, it is the tag given a friend with whom you share an interest you are passionate about. You may not necessarily talk with them every single day and the distance doesn’t pose a threat to your friendship. And when you reconnect, it feels like you never left.

I am passionate about friendships and loyalty is one quality I keep in close check. When my bestie finds herself in a troubled matter, I don’t mind standing in with her and sharing in her worst moment. But I believe, there is a limit to everything.

Being a snitch may sound distrustful but choosing to snitch on someone to spare yourself from being thrown behind bars yourself for a particular reason may not be such a terrible idea. It gets to that point where everyone has to think about himself, right?

A crime is a crime no matter who committed it and when one does commit a crime, it’s only fair that he subjects himself to be tried by the laws of the land. It would be unfortunate to have a friend who breaks the law in the first place and snitching on him/her would be the last thing I’d think of but going to prison in his place?

Going to prison isn’t just about being locked up, it’s about the wasted years you watch on helplessly, the ugly tag that sticks with you after you come out. Are you willing to be labeled an ex-con for a crime you didn’t commit? As much as l love my friends and I’d go out of my way to make them happy, a jail cell is way beyond what I can offer.

You might feel bad for snitching on your friend when you think of what the outcome would have been if you two had swapped places. Would he have snitched on you as well or would he have shown you how much he has your back by even taking your place behind bars?

I am no snitch but I’m not willing to be an inmate for a friend’s crime. He would continue living his life at your expense. I’d rather be by his side, helping out with his trial and if things don’t turn out how you wanted, and visit as much as I can. But taking the fall, I don’t think so.

What about you? What choice would you make and why? Kindly share your thoughts.

  3. Good question. Depends a lot on the crime and the friend. There are some friends who I’d happily take the fall for, and some who I’d just let sink or swim on their own.

No, never snitch. Its the “prisoners dilemma”. If the wrong person is arrested for a crime they didn’t commit then the odds of a conviction are in your favor. Don’t send your friend to prison for a case you can beat. And if your friends aren’t willing to do the same then are they really friends? Would you do 2 years in prison to save your friend from doing 10, 20, life? Its all kind of crazy to think about and in real life most people take the easy way out, but I would hope that the people I call friends would hold their mud. On the flip side tho, what type of friend are they if they allow you to go down for a crime they commited? If you did do that 2 years and saved them from getting a lot more time, your books better never be at 0!
