Suicide Is Not The Way Out For Depression

The fast-paced advancement of technology and amazing feature updates on the various social media platforms today are helping individuals and organizations communicate more effectively with their target audience. Facebook Live, Instagram Stories, Periscope, Snapchat, WhatsApp and several others are going all out to remove any sense of distance we might feel from others. There is no better time to be alive than today. But sadly, this technological blessing seems to be a double-edged sword and it sends shock waves across the world whenever news break of people misusing social media in a dangerous way.

There have been some recent reports of teen girls who streamed live their suicides on Facebook. These news broke my heart as I wondered what on earth could be bothering these youngsters to consider taking their own lives. Some of them take drastic measures after being bully victims for so long that they lose the urge to love themselves enough to resist. Some others do so after photos or videos of themselves in a compromising nature surfaces online.

It must feel terrible to be at the subject of the world’s ridicule and judgment for seemingly moral impropriety and it might feel that it would never go away. One would wish that the ground should literally open and swallow her up to escape it all and it sometimes ends with suicide.

I was deeply saddened by the news of another suicide of a first-year university student in Ghana with speculations of some academic challenges as the reason. Such news are always a shock to the people who know the victims personally saying they had no idea something was bothering her. This begs the question, do we know what’s going through the minds of the people we hang out with? Can we tell if they are troubled by something? Do they trust us enough to open up to us about their personal issues?

Emotional health is as vital as the physical; yet we hardly regard that. When we hear such sad stories and find out why they chose that path, it is even more baffling to discover ‘light-weighted’ reasons like heartbreak due to a breakup or an unfaithful partner. One would say it happens all the time. Why would one end her life because of one man when there are millions of them? The thing is, we all deal with issues differently and there’s a limit to how much one can take.

One can take bullying as an ‘unfortunate normal’ and endure it till it passes; another can’t. One sees a bad break as a phase, another sees as it the end of the world. We are all different. But we don’t have to deal with our issues alone. Sometimes, solitude helps; other times we need the company and counsel of others to preserve our sanity.

It’s okay to admit something is bothering you and you need help. It doesn’t make you weak; it only means you’re human. Depression and mental stress are real and it is a big deal so don’t underestimate how low they can pull you into being a shadow of yourself. No matter how reserved you are or mistrustful you are of others, there must be one person you can open up to. Sharing your problems helps.

Let’s strive to be one another’s keeper, shall we? Let’s avail ourselves to listen to our colleagues when they speak. Life isn’t all about us, you know. Don’t put up a wall such that they can’t approach you. You may not be able to offer a ready solution but your presence alone would mean a lot.

So let’s do our best to save lives by paying attention to the people around us. I’m here to listen to you, pray with you and offer whatever advice I have if you’re in need of it. Don’t hesitate to shoot me an email, okay?

I think it’s important to remember that depression (and specifically, suicidal ideation in teenagers and young children) is the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain. It’s not as simple as “I’m being bullied, I give up”–there is so much more to it than that (coming from someone with a long-standing history of depression). We tend to think of depression and suicide in purely emotional terms, but realistically, it’s a combination of both environmental factors AND physical symptoms that can be altered with medication, talk therapy, and cognitive behavior therapy. Great post!

That’s true, depression is more complicated but it always starts from something. Thanks for the insight, Michelle

Sad! But you said it as it is. Somex we all react differently.

But suicide is also a spirit and we need to keep our friends in prayer so they don’t get to that point over the edge where they cant return. It was exactly a week today that my hair stylist was telling how a married woman, a client came to her to fix her, only to be told within the week that she had committed suicide leaving three young children; the last being barely a year.

Why? She had called the hubby who hadn’t been home a couple of days only for his concubine to pick. Nobody know what conversation ensued but here we are she committed suicide that nigh drinking poison and it the elder child, about 8 years who called the dad that they are ready for school and they need mum to give them money and she’s not waking up.

I have a foster daughter who attempted suicide. She’s an orphan and she had left notes for all those who mattered appreciating them. She said especially me. She leaves home at dawn, goes somewhere into a forest and it seemed a force propelled her hence. She ended talking to her dead parents. We had been looking everywhere possible for her all these while….alerting some friends in the military and police. At exactly three o’clock, still worried and thinking about her, a thought and scene of her crossed my mind……she crossing the road suddenly and being hit by a vehicle on the Bolga highway, closer to the airport. I don’t know but I just began to pray intensely. Hmmmm guess what when she was finally decided to call to give her location and she was picked, she was on the Bolga highway. In narrating what happened, she rather confirmed what I thought and saw. So God directly intervened.

Its not easy but God is in control.

  9. Professional bloggers/writers don’t waste time painting the screen with some useless texts to bring about some useless, rehashed articles for the world to appreciate, no; but they spend little time wisely to creatively craft a mind-blowing, reasonable, mind-and-eyes-opening, life-enriching, soul-catching professional articles—like the one you’ve done here on your site—on the internet with some quality texts with good editing style as you have done here. I say kudos to you, josey, for this powerful article here. I am really in love with this your article here, buddy. Keep the good work going. You are so awesome. Success is at your doorstep over this great work. Have you ever thought of turning your brand into a solid online business? I don’t think so. But I see a great success in your work here if you do—rocworld.wordpress.com said so!

    Very insightful post!

I think it will help if we noticed when someone becomes silent all of sudden. It is during those times of silent they are likely to be planning suicide.
I have had attempt at suicide thrice, there are so many complications” that arises to make people that wants to take their life. It got to a point I wasnt feeling anything at all – I was practically emotionless and everyone in the house has no clue I was going through all that
People in our climes don’t take mental health serious, you would tell someone you are depressed and their responses isn’t encouraging.
If not for the blogging, maybe I wouldn’t be alive now because it was through blogging that I find the courage to share with bloggers who became friends.
Like you said, let us so empathy towards people that are going through depression. It is real like anything else, I was under it for few years but I am free now.

Beautifully written post. It’s easy for some to dismiss suicidality as weakness when is is really the result of dealing with very deep pain or mental illness for a long time. Thank you for spreading awareness.

  12. I love this message. People need people. God created us to live in community. I know I’m at my worst when I isolate myself. It’s hard to reach out because of shame sometimes so if others were alert and made a move to be safe and approachable or reached out themselves, many circumstances could change for many who live in this darkness and loneliness.
