What is liberty if you’re homeless and what is shelter if you’re a slave?
Shelter or refuge is a basic human need. We all need it to survive. Without it, chances of achieving any higher goals are little to none. Till you have a place to return to, with a roof above your head, there’s no point in trying to acquire anything since you’d have nowhere to keep it.
To be a free man is priceless. To have one’s will to do whatever he wants no matter how impoverished he may be would feel more satisfying than being the slave of the richest in the land. Slaves are treated less humanely than servants. A slave doesn’t know what fate lies ahead of him as he lies down to sleep.
A homeless thinks of what to do to make life better for himself. A slave thinks about what to do to remain in his master’s good graces; his mental faculty, energy and everything else is at the service and pleasure of the master. A slave may get to eat the crumbs off the master’s table; the homeless might be offered food by a charitable person or work hard enough to afford any meal of his choice.
No one can tell who is homeless by day since we’re all going about our business. It is only by night that one can identify them. But no one need to introduce a slave to you before you recognize him/her. They are identifiable both day and night. The homeless gets to enjoy his dignity as a free man just like everyone else. The slave is deprived of his dignity to be his own man.
The homeless is miserable at night; the slave is miserable around the clock. Regardless of how generous the master may be, the fact that his mood at a point directly influences your fate is a sorry state to be in.
I pray never to be homeless; but to think of being someone’s slave is abhorrent. I’d rather choose to be homeless-at least I decide where to lay down my head. A slave has no choice but to sleep in a pit if that’s what the master orders. No one was born to be a slave to another.
What do you think? Which one would you rather be and why? Kindly share your thoughts.
