Would You Rather #62: Be the Worst Player on the Best Team or Be the Best Player on the Worst Team?

For a team to be on its A-game, it requires the collaborative effort of every individual involved. Individual ability and effort would show the distinctions among them. Some would be justly celebrated, others underestimated or overrated. And it may be because of the team one finds himself in. It is easier to shine in some teams than others.

To be considered the worst player on the best team there is in a particular sport is spirit-crushing.  Whiles your teammates’ names are associated with accolades, admiration and iconicity, yours would only be mentioned in mean jokes and used in memes to dominate social media. It doesn’t do well for one’s ego. If one can be that bad, how did he even end up in the best team in the first place? Maybe it would be better for him to find a team that would appreciate him more-find his own pond to dominate.

A team to be called the worst sounds harsh. It might be a consistently under-performing team but I’m pretty sure it gets to win some games too. To be the best among the worst is nothing to gloat over. It’s a false positive; one that keep you complacent enough not to work harder. One good thing about sports is the opportunity to change teams-preferably to a bigger and better one.

So if you are known to be the best among the not-so-good, then there’s a higher chance that you’d be poached away to a team that you’d be proud to be part of. One can consider the ‘worst teams’ as stepping stones and not cells of the condemned. After all, it is more honorable to be upgraded to the ‘best’ team than to be downgraded to the team who wins the bottom position on the league table uncontested.

But would I prefer to be known as the best in my ordinary corner or to be taken to the extraordinary league only to be called the worst?

Being called the best or worst in any field is subjective. No matter how little your efforts are seen in your team, you’re still respected because of the team you’re in. It’s the team that makes the players excellent or average. The superstar needs the ordinary guy to make the pass for him to do his thing. So everyone matters. Being in the best team means there’s no choice but to be at one’s best at all times.  If one puts his all in it, sooner or later, he would be duly recognized.

And if it helps, the worst player in the best team might perform far better than the so-called best player in the worst team.

Being in the worst team and hailed as the best is oxymoronic. If you find yourself in such a position, don’t feel comfortable. It’s either you make it a point to make the team better or you leave and join the big guys. Surround yourselves with mates who challenge and inspire you. Don’t settle for those who make no effort to challenge you but settle to be beneath you. You shall surely and slowly rot away.

Thus, I’d rather be the least among the great than be the greatest among the least.

What do you think? Which one would you rather be and why? Kindly share your thoughts.

For me I think it depends on what I want or my purpose.
Sometimes being the the worst player in the best team could go on forever, there will be no need to pull up and match up after all they cover you up so why bother?

On the other hand being the best in the worst team depending on your purpose also will force you to put measures in place to get at least more than half of your team to match up.
Individuals make up a team and no matter what if one person lags behind, it will affect the team in some way.
It’s a lot of work for the best to take it upon himself to make the others better.
Perfect example is LeBron James was making it with Miami Heat but He quit to join the struggling Team, Cavaliers and Took it upon himself to achieve the unachievable and with hard work and determination He did it!

So I think it’s about where you are at the moment and where you wanna get to, some situations call for the former and others the latter😅.
    Thanks

To give one’s best is most important irrespective of team you play.if you take up a worst team, you act as a leader and help others give their best.if you take up a best team, you always strive to improve and that helps in your game too.I had enjoyed playing in both teams as I always give my best. That’s why they say losing is not a real problem in sports.but to lose without a fight is only a problem.

  5. Like they say birds of the same feathers flock together, I’d rather be the worst player on the best team, because it is only a matter of time before I become the best. So yes I agree with you.

It’s a hard one because of how much there is to consider and whilst reading the post I switched back and forth a couple of times between the two options but I think that I’d be the best on the worst team because as you said, I could be picked up by a better team.

Yeah, it’s quite a tough choice to make…. And you’re right, being the best in the worst could be an opportunity to be noticed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jeffrey
