Be My Guest

We’ve all been guests before;

Been both warmly welcomed;

And coldly received;

And we have all had guests before;

Some whom we were expecting;

Others who dropped by out of the blue;

Some we were happy to host;

Others who had a knack for bad timing;

Those who served as great company;

And those who were a plain bother;

The ones who left too quickly;

And the ones who overstayed their welcome;

Having been both hosts and guests;

We have ideas about how our guests should behave;

As well as those who host us;

Sometimes our expectations are not met;

Other times, they are exceeded;

The experience serve as fond memories;

Or hard lessons learned.

We come face-to-face;

With the flat out rude guests;

Or the pretentiously nice hosts;

Since we can’t live like islands;

There will always be times;

When people who will pop in

At the least convenient time;

Some might talk too much;

And stay too long;

But your inconvenience

Could be a friend’s therapy.

And since life hits everyone in different proportions;

Learn to be the guest people love to have around;

To ease their stress and not to multiply them;

Know where to draw the line between;

Catching up and prying into personal affairs;

What can be shared as jokes;

And should be kept hush-hush;

Because a guest’s slip of tongue;

Can break up a family;

And destroy relationships.

Want a shoulder to lean on?

Be my guest;

A listening ear or a helping hand?

I’ll be your person;

But I do hope;

That when I need you to return the favor;

You’d oblige and be my host;

Because we need each other;

To survive this life in one piece.
