Shed the Layers

Are your layers as great as this dip or not? (c)

Just like the skin has many layers;

We have many faces;

The one we put on when we meet

Someone for the very first time;

The one we reveal when

We trust others enough

To enter our comfort zone;

And the one we reveal when they

Finally enter the inner circle;

Just like every object;

Has a surface and an underlining;

We have superficial impressions

We portray for the public’s eye;

But the intentions we harbor;

Are best known to us;

Is what we claim to be;

Just a tip of the iceberg?

Will people be impressed

When they get to know the real us?

Or be shocked with the details?

A cracked wall repainted;

Doesn’t patch it up;

A corpse dressed up;

Doesn’t make it a living being;

Polish over dirt;

Doesn’t make it clean;

Stale meat seasoned;

Doesn’t make it fresh;

Just putting on layers;

Some don’t hold for long;

And when they come off;

They appear uglier than ever;

How many faces do you wear?

How many layers do you have

To peel away to reach the bone?

Wear and tear is not exclusive;

To fabrics and objects alone;

Sooner or later,

Your real character will show;

To those you want to hide it from;

It better be a deeper tone;

Of the color everyone knows you have;

And not a different shade altogether;

Be true to yourself;

Because the more you lie about who you are;

The more you begin to believe it yourself;

The worst self-disservice you can make;

Is to deceive yourself beyond recognition;

Enough of the layers;

It’s okay if you’re not perfect;

No one really is;

Instead of hiding it;

Let the light shine on it;

So you may know;

Where to patch,

And where to have a do-over;

You owe yourself that;

You owe yourself the real you.

    Thank you Josey! But I was kinda thinking, if naturally you’d like to smack a person you dont like and give your deepest frown but upon the title everyone has bestowed on you as “queen nice”, you act nice at the moment to the person, are you being fake or a Hippocrate?

      Lol… We all meet people we don’t like sometimes and we play nice out of courtesy. It helps because you later realize they are good people and that you didn’t miss out on getting to know them more.

    Beautiful poem ma’am.
    There’s so much truth therein.
    Like layers are our characters spread.

    Very true! I’ve seen some people put on layers and pretend to be something that they aren’t and the result is always ugly.
