Staying Natural

The thing that usually comes to mind when the word ‘natural’ comes up in my part of the world is hair. It is really impressive how many ladies are embracing the afro hair, slaying it with amazing kinky styles. It is like the scales have finally fallen off the eyes of many who first believed they had to look ‘continental’ to fit in globally. That said, going ‘natural’ isn’t for everyone especially those of us with tough stubborn hair. Nevertheless, kudos to those rocking it!

Some others are pretty cautious of what they eat and they prefer to eat as much fresh foods as possible. The many spices and preservatives tend to be detrimental to our health and it is safer to stay close to nature as much as we possibly can.

But apart from our lifestyle choices to keep relaxing cream far from the hair or processed foods from our stomachs, ‘going natural’ goes beyond that. It encompasses everything about staying true to yourself and being proud of it.

Not wearing makeup nor using hair and nail extensions are merely superficial aspects of staying natural. It is about accepting how and where you were created, believing you were created uniquely to reflect the image of the Creator and that you have everything it takes to fulfil your purpose here on earth deposited inside you. Obviously, talent alone won’t help you achieve your goal. Your skills and abilities need to be sharpened and enhanced. You may have to learn from and be mentored by someone to realize your highest potential.

The original is always better than the imitation. Those who have undergone cosmetic surgeries can testify to that. Appreciate who you are and strive to be the best that you can be with the abilities you’ve been entrusted with.
There is one or a couple of things that come naturally to everyone. You have that ability for a reason. Don’t devalue what you have and chase that of someone else’s. Everyone has a different assignment. Some may have to work alongside others to achieve a certain goal but in the end, we will all give account of what we were able to do with what we were given.

It is good to look up to others as role models but let no one be your ultimate standard since no two people are the same. I choose to strive daily to attain the perfection that is in Christ Jesus in every area of my life. That would be the best definition of me ‘staying natural’ – being exactly what God intends for me to be. Anything outside that parameter I consider a pollutant.
