Would You Rather #33: Lose your Vision or Hearing?

image

First of all, I pray never to lose either in my lifetime. To be born whole and live out your days without having any body part impaired is a blessing; one that can’t be underestimated. And for those who have lost one or both and still find the inner courage to take life on, I really admire your tenacity. I can’t imagine how hard your hustle is; those of us having all parts intact are not even finding it any easier. I pray God blesses your efforts and uses the impairments as advantages in your favor.

I must confess, this is one of the toughest questions on the list; one that I have tried to avoid but the number of unanswered questions are growing lean and I can’t put it off any longer. So here we go.

Why are our eyes positioned where they are and why do we need them? To see where we are headed and move in that direction. Vision gives clarity and clarity makes the pursuit of a course more achievable. If you can see where you are going, that’s your focus and you’d do whatever it takes to get there. But you can’t see where you’re headed, it means you have no idea what to expect when you get there and you’re most likely to miss it.

What about our ears? They are positioned on the sides so we can hear what is going on around us. What we hear influences our decisions both positively and negatively. The words we hear can either build us up or break us down. It is up to us to filter what we hear and use what we find beneficial and discard what is detrimental. But are we always able to make the distinctions rightly?

One may have his eyes working but it doesn’t necessarily guarantee perfect vision. It could be blurred or distorted and I wonder which is more dangerous: a distorted vision or no vision at all? (Not talking literally here).

You decide to see what you want when you’re looking at someone or something. It doesn’t matter how others interpret it but you know what you see and you stick to it. But when you keep on hearing that what you see isn’t exactly what it is, your perception begins to change to fit what you’ve heard. Sometimes, it’s great; other times, very unfortunate. One’s outlook on his life could be gloomy but words of encouragement could help him reshape his vision and ultimately, things could improve. On the other hand, one could see an opportunity in a crisis and would want to pursue it but voices would keep telling him it’s a wasteful venture and to ignore it. When such a person chooses to heed to what his ears are hearing and ignore what his eyes are telling him, he tends to lose in the end.

To lose my vision is to lose the ability to decide for myself if where I am headed is right or not. I would have to depend on my ears-trust the voice talking into it. To lose my hearing is to lose the other viewpoints there are to what I think I see. With the former, I lose my independence to decipher what is good or bad for me. With the latter, I lose my dependence on what others have to say. But at least, as long as I can see, I can read their suggestions and still make informed decisions.

This is hard. The eyes light up the mind and body but sometimes when you close your eyes, you see better. The ears serve as the body’s stereo. I don’t think I ever want to live without my eyes.

I know this is a tough question but I’d love to read your thoughts on this. Though they are both essential, which one would you sacrifice for the other and why?

Same as someone wrote above, my hearing is already shot, so to lose my sight on top of that would be devastating! At least being hard of hearing, I can still watch television with subtitles, and I can read (and write). Without sight, I’d have to change a whole lot more things.

  4. This is a really hard decision to make. To lose sight means I stop seeing all the beauty and art around me and to lose my hearing means no more music and I LOVE music. Lol sorry but I just can’t choose!

    1. I get what you mean 🙂 Although, if you are deaf you can still experience the beat and vibrations of music, so that’s the good part. They just experience music in a different way than you and I do 🙂

I think it’s such a tough question. I recently did a blindfolded nature walk with some young people in Sweden- link below 😉 and it was so interesting toughing and feeling all the different elements. But the thought of not seeing family members faces really makes me wonder. I really couldn’t answer definitely and would just have to take a random pick.

Hearing for sure. There are more convenient ways to keep this discreet (I.e. without the pity of others). Plus, I don’t trust people enough to lose my sight lol.

I know how it feels like to be blind on days I have to walk through the dark without my glasses and that has taught me to appreciate and take everything about my environment in but I seriously wouldn’t want to loose my sight and as for my ears, those two big elephant ears like to listen to juicy information so doing without them will be double tragedy

For me, the choice is very easy. We live in a visual society, such that if you can’t hear, you can read! But there’s no alternative to seeing. And darkness is not it! You constantly need someone else or a dog around for protection… You have to memorise environments and will be thrown off with changes to your environment. You can’t admire beauty in anything or anyone. You can’t be a designer and your creative abilities are severely challenged. If I lost my sight, I could no longer design websites, blog and engage with readers on social media. I would be dependent on audio messages to be able to interact in a world where most people rarely speak directly with each other. You could actually have whole conversations with someone in the sams house using Whatsapp! What I would miss from losing my hearing is listening to music and enjoying the sounds of nature and the real voices of people I love…but I can still receive all their messages. I can still watch TV with subtitles (though it’s not the same). Another negative is that I would be slow to recieve warnings like alarms or screams to get out of danger, but I would just be more vigilant to look around. And I also wouldn’t have the problem of noisy neighbour or listening to talkatives and gossips! So, losing my hearing is by far more ppreferable. Though I would miss music and dancing…I would still be able to write and work and interact with the world with minimal changes in my life.

    Great one!

And I love food…and it’s just not the same when you can’t see your food. Oh knows if your enemy will serve you maggot-ridden rice! Oh my…there are too many things with loss of sight. You won’t be able to watch your kids grow up or see your daughter in her wedding gown…or enjoy a nice resort, because you can’t see. Can you even swim without sight? Sorry, this is too easy. I know losing my hearing would be hard, but losing sight would be a horrible nightmare!
