Little Lady

Sadie’s her name;
Dreamy were her eyes;
Innocent was her mind;
Hopeful she’s always been;
Life to her was like a jolly ride;
The skies are always blue and the sun always shines.

But for her, life had other plans;
That perfect was a word beautiful to say but difficult to live out;
That black and white were not the only lines that existed;
That between them lay many shades of grey;
That truth was absolute, but right and wrong were relative;
That life is what you make of it;

Her skin once unscathed now bears scars;
The then fragile soul now all-toughened up;
The innocent smile she wore now laced with suspicion;
Many times she has fallen but each time she got back up;
Soiled her garments became more than once but the dirt she shook off;
Through it all, she survived.

Why, because Sadie’s a survivor;
She learnt that life was like a carousel;
The music never stopped playing and so never should she;
She sometimes wished that she had stayed innocent for a while longer;
But she is also grateful for the hard lessons learned;
Because at the end, no one can deny that she passed the test.
