Like a Tree

Like a seedling, you started life cared for by family;
Watered with enough advice and guidance;
So healthy were your leaves as you soaked it all in;
And strong were your roots as they were firmly embedded;
Going for Sunday school classes; saying a prayer every morning;
Safe you felt in your little pot.

And then you were sent to the main field;
Where watering became irregular;
Invaded was your personal space as you had to share them with weeds;
Shaky your roots felt as you had to fight for survival on your own;
Your habits began to change and started to adapt to those of your peers;
Going wherever the wind blows you;

Your once beautiful green leaves began to fade into sick yellow;
The harsh weather stifling whatever reserve you’ve got;
One by one your leaves began to drop;
No fruit to boast of;
Lost your beauty and glory;
And your identity mistaken for a mere weed.

But God bless the gardener who came to your rescue;
Pruning your many but thin and weak branches;
Felt painful thinking that you’ve lost all that you’ve worked for;
But grateful later when you realized that all your chains have been broken;
All the weeds around you cleared;
The air was all around for you to breathe;

Now you gleam with your fruits hanging proudly around you;
Everyone who sees you stops to acknowledge you;
Many anxious to have a taste of your fruit;
Growing up hasn’t been easy;
Thought you wouldn’t make it;
But here you are: well done!

This is for you all who went through a lot of hardships;
Temptations, tests and trials;
But like gold put through fire;
You came out refined and bright;

Thank God for not giving up on you during your darkest hours;
And remember your family and friends who stood with you throughout your hard times;
Because the ones you meet on your way to the mountain top;
Will be the very ones you’ll see on your way back.

    Thanks so much for such a heartfelt reminder to never give up – because our Father will never give up on us, and will see us through.
