Mike looked at his watch and closed up a file.
“I’ll excuse you now; I’ll come back when you’re done,” he said, getting up.
“What are you talking about? You can stay here; we’re not done yet.”
“Well, I wanted to excuse you for your daily love check.” Ethan looked up from the monitor.
“I know you called your wife every day at noon and that is why I want to give you your due privacy.”
“Oh, don’t worry about that. Sit down.”
“Does that mean you’re not going to call her?”
“No, I’m not.” Mike sat.
“Did you two have a fight?”
“Yeah, something like that.”
“Serious enough to bail out on your usual call-in?”
Ethan sighed as he looked at his colleague and long-time friend.
“Lisa has been on the pill for God knows how long and she hid it from me. I just found the bottle this morning.”
“Okay…had you already discussed it?”
“We kind of did before we got married but…she should have told me. I can’t believe I’ve been trying in vain all this while to get her pregnant.”
“You wanted to and you didn’t tell her either? Well, that puts you at fault too, Ethan.”
“Whatever…but I thought we’d be honest with each other. I talked about the baby issue last night and she totally freaked out. That’s what got me wondering.”
“And what did she say when you confronted her?”
“She said she is at the peak of her career…”
“Yes she did.” His phone began to ring. It was Lisa calling. He clicked on ‘ignore’.
“Whatever the case may be, I don’t think you should be harsh on her; not to deny her the usual love check at least,” Mike insisted.
“I don’t want to have the conversation right now and over the phone. We’ll talk in the evening.”
“Do you promise that?” Ethan glanced at him.
“I know how you can avoid having an important talk when the situation demands it. Don’t blow this out of proportion.”
“I hope so too.” He got up and took his file.
“I’ll leave you now; I’ve got something to attend to.”
“Sure; catch you later. I need to wrap up my research on my case as soon as possible.”
“All the best with that, Ethan.” He left the office.
Lisa got out of the bathroom and checked her phone. She had a voicemail.
“Hey Liz, I’ll be a little late tonight so go ahead and have dinner without me. I’ll see you later, bye.”
Lisa sighed as she dropped the phone on the bed.
“Now you’re taking this way too far, Ethan Richards,” she said to herself.
Ethan sighed when he pulled over in front of his home and killed the engine. He glanced at the passenger seat and took the bouquet of flowers lying on it. He got out and locked up the doors.
Lisa was sipping tea in the living room when she heard the sound of the automatic door locks. She placed the mug on the coffee table and got up. The door opened and Ethan entered. Lisa sighed in relief.
“Oh Ethan, you had me worried…” Ethan didn’t respond but looked at her intently. She dropped her shoulders in despair when she realized he was still cross with her.
“Ethan…” He walked to her and kissed her deeply. She was taken aback by his act.
“What is going on?”
“I’m sorry Lisa…for being a jerk today… I shouldn’t have ignored you like that.” He gave her the bouquet. She smelled the flowers.
“Does that mean you’ve forgiven me?”
“I should be the one to ask for your forgiveness. I wanted to get you pregnant without asking for your consent and that was wrong. I guess I just flared up knowing that all my efforts were being flushed out.” Lisa giggled. Ethan chuckled.
“I forgive you, Ethan and I want you to know that if you really want us to start a family, I’m all in,” Lisa said eagerly. Ethan took her hands and kissed them.
“No, I don’t want to rush this…let’s talk about this thoroughly first considering everything about us and our careers but not now, of course.”
“Sure; have you eaten?”
“Nope; have you?”
“I couldn’t…I was sipping tea when you arrived. So where were you all this while?”
“I was thinking about us…somewhere.”
“Okay…go and freshen up whiles I prepare you tea…it’s pretty late to eat anything heavy.”
“Thanks love.” He kissed her cheek and went upstairs.
About six weeks later…
“Hey love…how are you feeling this morning?”
“I’m fine…” Lisa replied as she opened the fridge and took out a jug of water. She poured some into a glass and gulped it down.
“You slept like a horse….” She eyed him as she put the jug back in the fridge.
“I didn’t want to wake you…that’s why I prepared breakfast.”
“Want some eggs?”
“No…please…whatever you’re doing, please hurry up with it because it’s making me nauseous,” she said and went to sit at the table. Ethan joined her. Lisa bit into a toast and sipped some tea. She cleared her throat.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah…I just feel…funny.” Ethan looked at her suspiciously.
“It’s nothing…Ethan; don’t give me that ‘doctor’ look. I’m not sick.”
“Are you sure about that?”
“Yes I am.” Ethan began eating his eggs.
“Oh gosh…the smell of your eggs sickens me, Ethan.”
“This isn’t the first time I’ve heard that in the morning.”
“Oh my…” She got up and rushed out of the room. Ethan was alarmed. He got up and followed her. He tried to open the door but it was locked.
“Open up, Liz.”
“I’m coming.” He heard the sound of the WC flushing. She opened the door.
“Now you can’t tell me you’re okay… go up and get ready. You’re going to the hospital with me,” Ethan said.
“That won’t be necessary. It’s not what you think. I’ve been careful, remember?”
Lisa insisted. Ethan stared at her for a moment and went back to the table.
“I don’t think I’ve the appetite for breakfast.”
“You barely finished one toast.”
“I know… I’ll go and dress up.”
“You’re still not done dressing up?” Ethan asked as he looked at himself in the mirror.
“Listen, I’m not asking you to wait up for me. You can go if you’re done.”
He glanced at her. “Why are you being so grumpy this morning?”
“I’m not being grumpy…you’re the one being irritating today.”
“Aren’t you running late? Someone could be on the table, counting the seconds you’re not in contemplating if he would make it and you’re here, wasting time,” Lisa said.
Ethan was puzzled; he chuckled.
“I’m out of here.”
“Good.” She looked into the mirror to apply lipstick on her lips.
“No matter how unbearable you can get sometimes, I still love you.” He kissed her cheek. She noticed he was still standing there, looking at her.
“Won’t you escort me to my car?”
“Seriously? Do you forget that I’m a working lady too?”
“But you’re Mrs. Richards too, my love. Come on,” he said, putting his arm around her shoulder and pulling her along.
“What is wrong with it?”
“Yeah, you bought it for me, remember?”
“I did, huh?”
“Are you sure you’re okay? We can just go to my hospital and run some checks.”
“No, I’m fine.”
“If you say so.”
When they got to the front door, they hugged. Ethan noticed Lisa was uncomfortable.
“Bye, Ethan; you’re beyond late today.” She pushed him outside and closed the door. Ethan got into the car and started the engine. Lisa rushed upstairs. Ethan killed the engine and got out. He entered the house and went upstairs.
“Ewww….what the hell is this?” Lisa said furiously to herself as she wiped her mouth and opened the tap. She raised her head to find Ethan, looking at her with arms folded. Lisa sighed.
“You’ve no excuse; you’re coming with me. Grab your purse.”
“It’s nothing, Ethan; I’m sure it’s mere indigestion.”
“Whatever it is, I don’t want you feeling like this all day. Come on, I’m taking you to the hospital.” He took her purse and handed it to her. She took it.
They got into the car and drove off.
“Oh no…” Lisa said, searching through her purse.
“What is it?”
“I left my phone back at home. It’s all your fault. You didn’t give me time to take the essentials.”
“What do you need your phone for?”
“I need to call my secretary.”
“You can use mine,” He said, giving it to her.
“I don’t know her number off-head! She’ll think I’ve been kidnapped or something!”
“Kidnapped? Isn’t that a little overboard? Why, are you working against a terrorist group or something?” Lisa chuckled.
“I always work with or against dangerous people, Ethan.” He looked at her. She gave him a playful wink.
“Oh, what am I going to do?”
“Type ‘Liz sec.’”
“Why do you have my secretary’s number on your phone, Ethan?”
“For emergency reasons like this one; the same way you have Mike’s number on yours.”
“Hmm… I see. Aren’t you a darling?” He smiled. She leaned forward and kissed his cheek. She dialed the number.
“Hey Sue, this is Lisa Richards…” Ethan smiled at the sound of his name. He still does not believe he got married to the gorgeous Lisa Cooper.
“I’ll see you later; take care.” She hung up. She gave it back to his.
“Thanks.” She sighed.
“What do you think could be wrong with me?” she asked. He glanced at her and looked away.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing, Lisa. We’ll find that out at the hospital, okay?”
He pulled over at the hospital. He got out and opened the door for Lisa. He offered her his hand and she took it. She got out and he locked the doors. They held hands as they entered the hospital.
“Heyy…what a pleasure to see the sweetest couple of our time!” Mike exclaimed when he saw them.
“Hi Michael,” Lisa greeted.
“Hi to you too, Lisa; so great to see you. What are you doing here?”
“Lisa isn’t feeling very well so I brought her to run some check-ups,” Ethan explained.
“Oh, the stress of working at the chambers is getting to you, huh? I hope it’s nothing serious,” Mike said.
“Yeah, I hope so too.”
“Okay, I’ll see you two later; got to run.”
“Yeah…see you too.” “Let’s go.”
“You can go to work now, Ethan; I’ll call you when the results get in,” Lisa said.
“No way; such tests don’t take much time and I don’t want to leave your side. I have a feeling you’ll run away the moment I leave this room,” Ethan said. She chuckled. The door opened. A nurse entered.
“Well, I have good news for you, Mr. and Mrs. Richards…” she announced.
“Good news? I… I don’t understand,” Lisa asked, confused. Ethan put his hand on her waist to calm her down.
“You’re pregnant, six weeks old actually,” she declared with all smiles.
“What? How is that even possible? I’ve been protecting myself!” Lisa exclaimed.
“Okay…I’ll give you space so the news may sink in; excuse me,” the nurse said and left the room. Lisa turned to face her husband.
“What is going on here, Ethan?”
“What do you mean?”
“Why am I pregnant?”
Ethan almost laughed. “What? Are you really asking me that?”
“We both agreed that we were going to wait till next year or so; so why did you do this to me?”
“What did I do?”
“You got me pregnant!” Lisa said, poking his chest with her finger after each word.
“You are the one on the pill not me, Liz. Perhaps the pills failed you.”
“They never fail, Ethan! You must have done something to me when I wasn’t aware.”
“Then how else can you explain the results? Oh goodness, I’ve a very busy year and you know that. I have a lot of trips pending. I can’t do that carrying a child!”
“I can’t believe you’re acting all agitated about this when we should be celebrating. This is good news, Lisa.”
“You knew it all along, didn’t you?”
“Don’t play dumb now, Ethan; you knew I was pregnant, didn’t you?”
“Well yeah, I had my suspicions. But hey, it may look inconvenient at the moment but let’s give it time and breathe. We can figure something out.”
“Will you let me travel around with your baby?”
“Well…we have to discuss all this…”
“Whatever…I’m going to work,” Lisa said, grabbing her purse.
“No, you’re not, Lisa. You’re not in a good mood to work and you’ll only make Sue’s day miserable. I can foresee you firing her for no good reason if you step into your office today. Take the day off and go home. Relax and breathe. I’ll meet you later.”
Tears filled Lisa’s eyes as she bit her lower lip.
“Fine; but I’m not going to forgive you for doing this, Ethan Richards,” she said and walked out, slamming the door behind her. He sighed.
Mike entered Ethan’s office.
“Hey, what happened? I met Lisa on her way out and she practically ignored me,” he said, sitting down.
“Yeah…well the results came in and she wasn’t very pleased about it.”
“We are pregnant.”
“What, that’s great news! Why wouldn’t she be happy?”
“Because we decided to wait a little while longer.”
“So what happened?”
“I don’t know…either she missed taking a pill or… I don’t know.”
“Are you sure you didn’t do anything behind her back?” he asked suspiciously.
“Well…I may have but she mustn’t know or else she’ll kill me. She said she won’t forgive me for what has happened,” Ethan said.
“Don’t worry; she’ll get over it.”
“I hope so because if this is how her mood is going to be over the next eight months, I’m afraid to say it’s going to be hell at home.”
“You’re a doctor, Ethan; you know these things. You can manage Lisa.”
“If only you knew…”
In the evening, Ethan returned home. The house seemed quiet when he entered.
“Lisa, I’m home!” There was no answer. He went to the kitchen but found it empty. He went upstairs to their bedroom but she wasn’t there. He opened the office door and finally found her. He gave a sigh of relief. She was on the phone.
“Yes please; I’ll see you tomorrow so we can go over the details. Have a good night, bye.” She hung up.
“I can see you’ve managed to keep yourself busy,” Ethan said, kissing her on the cheek.
“That’s because I’m by nature a busy woman; I’m not going to let anyone get in my way,” she said and sat down. She took some files and began to go through them.
“Don’t tell me you’re still acting mad about this whole pregnancy thing.”
“Acting? I’m furious, Ethan. I wouldn’t be if I knew it was my fault but obviously it’s not. You made me pregnant even after you promised that you’d wait.”
“The thing is you’re pregnant now; so can we drop the blame game and talk about this?” Ethan asked.
“What is there to talk about? It’s not like it’s going to disrupt my schedule in any way.”
“Ethan, if you don’t mind, I’ve some papers to go through so could you please excuse me?”
“Fine…” He turned to leave. He stopped and turned back.
“Have you prepared dinner?”
She lifted her eyes and glanced at him.
“Don’t worry; I’ll be done with it by the time you finish taking a shower.” He nodded and left the office.
They ate dinner in dead silence. The only sounds heard were that of the cutlery making contact with the plates. Lisa succeeded in avoiding any eye contact with Ethan. When they were done, Ethan crept behind Lisa as she washed the dishes in the kitchen and wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his chin on her shoulder.
“I’m sorry, Lisa…” he whispered and kissed her shoulder bone. Lisa paused.
“Ethan…please; don’t make this any harder for me than it already is.”
“I didn’t mean to put you in such an uncomfortable position,” he apologized.
“If you really mean that, then please leave me alone and let me finish this up,” she said, her voice choked with emotion as tears filled her eyes.
“Okay…I’m sorry; I’m going upstairs.”
Ethan sighed as he sat on the bed and took his phone. He dialed a number.
Mike answered almost immediately. “Hey buddy, what’s up?”
“I think Lisa is more upset than I imagined. It’s getting out of hand.”
“She’ll get over it; just give her time.”
“This was supposed to be an awesome night for the both of us but she wouldn’t even look at me.”
“I understand you’re hurt but you try to sleep it off. Tomorrow might get better.”
“I hope it does; thanks for hearing me out, Mike. Goodnight.”
“You too, Ethan.” The line went dead. The door opened and Lisa entered. She entered the bathroom and closed the door. Ethan got into bed and took a book to read. After some time, Lisa came out. She was about to get into the bed when Ethan said, “Wait.” He got out of bed and walked to her.
“What?” He held her hands and squeezed it gently.
“I just want to remind you of what I said earlier….that I love you, Lisa and even when things are a bit rough right now…I want you to know that I love you even more.”
Lisa stared at him for some time and inhaled.
“I love you too, Ethan,” she said in a soft tone. A tear trail fell from her eye. Ethan wiped it away with his thumb.
“I’m sorry…I thought you’d be happy…”
“And I am…it’s just that…I had things planned and…. I really wanted to have time to spend with you and the baby… I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings…. I didn’t want to…”
Lisa apologized. Ethan stopped her words with a kiss. More tears fell down her cheeks.
He hugged her tightly. “It’s okay; we’re going to get through this.”
They got to bed and they cuddled.
“We’re going to be the best parents ever…”
