Leave To Cleave Chapter One

That's what marriage is all about, right?
That’s what marriage is all about, right?

Ethan Richards is one of the renowned cardiologists living in the south. He practices at the Peace General Hospital being the head of the cardiology unit. He keeps a very tight schedule but he does all he can to make and spend quality time with his lovely wife, Lisa. Checking up on her at work has become kind of a routine now.
Lisa was talking on the telephone when her cellphone rang. She glanced at the caller ID and quickly said, “Okay, I’ll get to you later, bye.” She hung up and answered her phone.
“Hey love…” he breathed into the phone.
“You were late today; ten minutes to be exact.”
“Yeah, I’m sorry…got caught up in something important. How are you doing?”
“I’m good….hanging in there; I miss you.”
“I miss you too honey; I’m sorry I rushed out of the house this morning.”
“Yeah, I didn’t get to see how you looked this morning. Hope you didn’t forget anything at home.”
“No I didn’t… I was thinking…how about we have a dinner date tonight?”
“Dinner date? That sounds…romantic. What else do you have in mind, hubby?”
“Hmm…still processing….so what do you say, do we have a date?”
“Yes we do, Ethan.”
“Good; I’ll pick you up at 5:30; it that cool?”
“It’s perfect; see you then love.”
“Yeah, take care of yourself.”
“Mwuaah.” She hung up. A mail alert popped up on her monitor.
“Exactly the mail I was waiting for…” She said.

A colleague called out to Lisa as she was walking out of the chambers’ premises. Lisa stopped and turned.
“Lisa… I was wondering if you could spare me about an hour to have a cup of coffee with me.”
“Oh Dennis…. I wish I could but I’m actually on my way to a date with my husband,” Lisa replied with a tight smile.
“Oh I see…. I guess next time then,” he said with a fallen countenance.
“Yeah, perhaps.” She stepped out to find her smiling husband, leaning against his sleek, black, sparkling Mercedes, waiting for her. She smiled back and walked towards him. They greeted each other with a kiss.
“I’ve been thinking about you all day,” Ethan said softly, squeezing her arms affectionately.
“Me too; I’ve been looking forward to this date. Feels like when we started seeing each other.”
“Uh huh; I don’t want us to lose that romantic part of our lives together,” he said, opening the car door for her. She sat inside. He closed the door and got in. He started the engine and switched on the radio. The couple glanced at each other.
“Is this really a coincidence that this song is playing at this moment?” Lisa asked.
“That means we’re going to have a good time tonight,” he answered with a wink.
He started the engine and drove away.
They sat at a reserved table requested by Ethan. They were served with their favorite wine as they scanned through the menu.
“Have you decided on your order?” the waiter asked Ethan. He looked up.
“My lady here will have potato chips with green salad with mayonnaise and chicken.”
“And my man will have the same with vinaigrette dressing,” Lisa added, closing up the menu.
“Sure ma’am; excuse me,” he said and walked away. Ethan took his wife’s hand in his and kissed it.
“I don’t understand why I feel like this but it’s like I’m falling in love with you all over again.”
“I feel the same way, darling.” Ethan raised his glass.
“To us and our love.”
“To us….” Their glasses clinked. They were served with their meals minutes later. They chatted and laughed and fed each other.
They arrived home around 9p.m. Lisa collapsed on the bed.
“I’m exhausted,” she sighed.
“I know… I’m sorry; I kept us outside for quite too long,” Ethan said, getting on his knees to take her shoes off. Lisa sat up.
“Oh it’s not that; I totally enjoyed myself tonight.”
“I’m glad.” He smiled. She kissed him. He pushed her onto the bed, bending over her.
“I’ve to….no, we have to take our shower, dear.”
“I know…but we could spare a few minutes…” He kissed her neck.
“I wish I could but… I have work to go to tomorrow…”
“Ethan please…shower first.” He got off her. She sat up.
“Thanks for being so understanding,” she said with a smile and walked into the bathroom. Ethan sighed and collapsed onto the bed.
Lisa came out of the bathroom to find her husband looking out the window, sipping juice. She walked to him and wrapped her arms around him, placing her head on his back.
“What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing….just reflecting on how far I’ve come.”
“It has been one long journey, huh?”
“You have no idea.” He put his glass down and turned, facing her. He held her hands.
“I tell you this all the time and I’ll never stop telling you this: I love you Lisa; more than words can say…and I know there will be times that we might doubt the value of these words but I want to assure you that whenever I’m in a bad mood and I say something mean, I want you to always know that, I love you beyond that.”
Lisa nodded, blinking hard so that the tears which had begun forming in her eyes would not fall.
“And I also want you to know that whenever I’m flaring up and I say something hurtful, always remember I love you beyond that,” Lisa confessed. He smiled and kissed her forehead.
“I’ll go and take my shower now.” She nodded. He entered the bathroom. Lisa sat on the bed with a contented smile. What more can I ask for, she thought happily.

Lisa is a fast-rising successful lawyer who has won all the six major cases she handled in the past two years. Her quick rise to success in the law field made her one of the eligible spinsters in town-until she married Ethan Richards. But her wedding band on her finger does not prevent encroachers from still hitting on her. From public officials to common salary earners, she receives promises of paradise on earth. What helps her head screwed on right is the lovely photo of her and Ethan on top on her desk which she glances at every minute. It reminds her of the heavenly pasture she lives on with her adorable husband.
She stepped out of the court with a sigh.
“Thank you Lisa for today and for everything. I would have lost everything if not for you,” a middle-aged man said gratefully. They shook hands.
“I only did my job, Steve. I’m glad you won’t be troubled by this anymore.”
“All thanks to you. How about I buy you lunch to make up for the many times you missed yours?” he offered.
“Awww…how sweet of you but I’ve to rush to the office. I’ve other urgent matters to attend to but I’ll call you up on it one of these days.”
“I’ll be expecting your call. Have a nice day, Lisa.”
“You too, Steve.” She walked to her car and sat inside. She drove away.

Lisa was preparing dinner when her phone rang.
“Yes sweetie…please tell me you’re at the door…”
“No dear; I’m sorry but I’ll be home late home today. There’s one emergency surgery I need to do scrub in tonight.”
“Okay…so how late are we talking about?”
“I’m not going to give you a specific time so you don’t have to wait up for me. You can go to bed whenever you feel like it.”
“Oh come on, you know I don’t mind waiting up for you.”
“I know but I always come to meet you sleeping on the couch and I have to carry you to the bedroom and let me say, you seem to gain weight each time I do that and my back hurts.”
“Oh sorry…didn’t mean to cause you much pain,” Lisa said teasingly. Ethan chuckled.
“I’ll see you later, honey. Don’t worry about me.”
“So can I call to…check up on you?”
“I’ll be in surgery, Lisa… I don’t think I can answer a phone call.”
“Oh…” He chuckled. “Why do you always ask that when you already know the answer?”
“Well, with the hope that, one night, there would be a way out.”
“Yeah, maybe. Take care, sweetie.”
“You too, dear.” She hung up and sipped her juice.

Later in the night, Ethan entered the bedroom to find Lisa sleeping peacefully. He smiled as he entered the bathroom.
He slipped into bed beside her, wrapping his arms around her and kissing her hair. Lisa squirmed.
“Are you back?” She asked, eyes still closed.
“Yes honey, I am.”
“Have you taken your shower?”
“Yes I have.” She half-turned towards him.
“And dinner, have you eaten something?”
“Yes I have, darling. Now go back to sleep,” Ethan replied, turning her back towards him. “Goodnight.” He kissed her neck and put off the bedpost lamp.

Lisa is the only child of her parents. They have been the people who meant most to her before of course, Ethan came along. Because they are old, Lisa pays a visit to them from time to time, to spend some time with them.
Her mother entered the kitchen to find Lisa doing the dishes.
“Oh Lisa, you don’t have to do all that…”
“Oh come on mother, I’ve been doing this my whole life.”
“But you belong to someone else now.”
“Don’t worry; I know Ethan will understand.” She wiped her hands dry with a napkin.
“Is dad up from his nap? Lunch is ready.”
“Yes he is; I’ll go and get him.”
“Thanks mum.”
“You cooked all this for us, dear?” her father asked as he sat at the table.
“Yes father; to say thank you again for raising me this way for Ethan to love me the way he does.”
“Hmm…He must love you if you do prepare him such sumptuous meals.”
“All thanks to mummy.” They ate and chatted heartily.

Her mother escorted her to her car.
“Thanks for passing by, honey; it really means a lot to us.”
“I know mum; it means a lot to me too.” She opened up her bag and brought out an envelope and handed it to her.
“Please take this mum.”
“Oh my dear but…”
“It’s from Ethan, mother. This is his way of making up for not coming with me. Please accept it.” She took it.
“Thanks dear.” They hugged.
“I’ll be on my way now.”
“Sure; please thank Ethan for us and send him our regards.”
“Will surely do so, mum. Take care of yourself and dad.”
“I will; you too, darling.” She sat in the car and started the engine. They waved at each other; she drove away.
Tears formed in the mother’s eyes.
What would have I done without such a blessing of a daughter? She thought.

Lisa was serving Ethan dinner when he asked, “Did you go off somewhere today? I called your office and I was told you took an early leave today. I tried your cell and it was redirected to your voicemail.”
“Yeah, I went to visit my folks today.”
“Ah, I see…how are they doing?”
“They are good… I prepared them lunch and had a chit chat with them. It was fun.”
“Hmm…..that’s good. Next time you’ve plans of dropping by their place, could you please let me know? I’d love to see them too.”
“Sure…of course; I’m sorry, I didn’t tell you. The thought just occurred to me and I acted on it…. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to go without you.”
“It’s okay, I understand.”
Lisa smiled with a sigh of relief as Ethan reached out and held her hand across the table. He squeezed it gently and released it.
“How was work today?” She asked him.
“It was okay…a very complicated case was brought to me today and it has really got me thinking.”
“Why, does it involve surgery?” He nodded.
“And…you think it’s risky?”
“Very…the nature is beyond complicated and if I happen to make the slightest mistake of cutting the wrong nerve, I could render the patient bedridden till death.”
Lisa rubbed her palm against his arm comfortingly.
“You’ve been in this situation before, Ethan and you did it. This time won’t be any different. I believe in you, Ethan.” He glanced at her.
“Thanks honey.” They finished up their meals.

They kissed and smiled at each other.
“You were wonderful tonight, honey,” Lisa said, breathless.
“You were amazing as always.” He rolled onto the bed, beside her.
“In for another round?”
“What?” Lisa exclaimed, stunned. He reached out and touched her face.
“I want you pregnant, Lisa.” Color drained from her face.
“Wh…what are you saying, Ethan?” she whispered.
“I want us to have a baby.”
“But the last time we talked about this, we both agreed that…”
“I know but now when I think about it, what is there to wait for? We have the rest of our lives to live together, the earlier we become a family, the better for us because we can get the raising kids part done and over with and then we can still have fun and spend quality time together.”
“Ethan…” He leaned forward and kissed her. He put his arm around her, pulling her closer. He leaned in for another kiss but Lisa avoided his lips.
“What is it?”
“I’m tired.” He glanced at her, puzzled.
“You know I’ve to leave early tomorrow for work.” She looked at him.
“I’m sorry; excuse me.” She got off the bed and walked to the bathroom and closed the door shut. She leaned against the door and sighed heavily. She opened the glass cabinet and sighed again. She stared at the pill bottles and shut it in frustration. When she opened the door, Ethan was standing there, staring at her. She got quite startled. She tried clearing her throat.
“Is there something wrong, Lisa?”
“No, of course not. Why would you think that?”
“Is it about what I said?”
“About what?”
“About us having a baby, is that what spooked you?”
“Oh no….it’s not that, Ethan.”
“Then what is it?”
“What is what, that I want to retire to bed now? I thought I told you I need to report to work very early tomorrow,” she said as she walked past him and got into bed. Ethan remained where he stood for some time. When he turned to look at her, Lisa turned to avoid meeting his glance. He joined her in bed.
“Goodnight,” he said quietly.
“Goodnight.” He switched off the bedpost lamp.

The next morning, Ethan opened his eyes to find Lisa still sleeping. He got up and entered the bathroom. He opened the cabinet door to pick something up when his eyes fell on a pill bottle. He took it and read the inscription. He chuckled in realization and was about to put it back when the door opened. Lisa entered sleepily, rubbing her eyes. She froze when she saw the bottle in his hands. Ethan sighed and lifted it.
“What is this, Liz? Should I even be asking this?”
“Well, it’s because of what we discussed…”
“How long have you been on this?”
“Ethan…don’t take this wrongly. I only wanted…”
“Why would you hide this from me, Lisa?”
“It’s not like that, honey… I was only waiting for the right time.”
“Right time to do what, tell me about it or stop taking this?”
“Because of what you said last night, I didn’t take it….”
“I see…so you’re ready to have a baby now?”
“Ethan….you know I’m at the peak of my career…”
“So that is what this is about, huh? Your career!”
“You said you didn’t want one right now.”
“And now I think we do.”
“Fine; then I… I will stop taking the pills.”
“I can’t believe this,” Ethan said, putting the bottle down. He walked out of the bathroom. Lisa sighed.
Lisa entered the kitchen to find Ethan frying omelets. She walked to him and said, “I’m off to work.”
“Bye then.” She looked at him. It was obvious he was mad at her. She leaned forward and kissed his cheek. He ignored her. She was about to say something but she stopped herself. “Bye love.” She walked out.
