What am I wearing today?

When we wake up in the morning and look in our wardrobe, looking for something to wear, what is going through our heads? Why do we choose what we wear each day? Do we dress to impress people we meet on the streets, to feel sexy, to express how we are feeling that day or to glorify our Maker?
People nowadays wear the most hideous of clothes all in the name of keeping up with fashion. And we can all admit that one can deduce one’s character from his or her dressing. Some people wear clothes which are so loud to attract every attention close by and even from a distance; some don’t love their bodies enough to care for it and some just want to show others that they are well endowed in some body parts.
But as children of God, what is our wardrobe supposed to be like? What are others to think of us when they see us dressed up? We as Christians are the manifestation of God’s glory on earth, we are His body on earth, and we are the bride of Christ. So what should we wear to proclaim to the world as such?

Ephesians 6 verses 14 to 17 give us the perfect description of our daily attire. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness and as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit which is the word of God (ESV).
Wow, that’s some kind of outfit, huh? As we should by now is that, dressing is an inside out expression. What you feel inside, you express it outwardly through your dressing. So if it is our aim to proclaim to God that we are His, we should take our time to select our clothes each day. We should ensure we are well dressed at all times because anything less or more tells another story.

Wherever we go, people should know us to be truthful at all times. People should take us at our word because we would utter nothing but the truth. And wherever we find ourselves, let’s make it a point to be the standard for righteousness. Even if no one around us is doing the right thing, let’s be the pacesetters wherever we may be, be it in the workplace, at the hostel, in class, at the mall, anywhere people can be. We should also be people of peace. We should not be the ones to fan unnecessary arguments; we should be the ones to restore peace where it is lacking. We should always be at peace in our spirit so as to be able to commune with God anywhere. People should see as people of a calm disposition.

We should also have unshaking faith in God. The Bible says in Hebrews 11 verse 6 that those who come to God should believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. When we go through turbulent times, we should not be the first ones to give up and give in to desperation and frustration. We should be the ones with the strongest convictions that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8 verse 28-ESV). Our faith should be strong enough to overcome any obstacle in our way. Basically, we should have received the salvation from our Lord Jesus Christ. We should have cast all our past sins and burdens of guilt on the precious cross. We should be the redeemed of the Lord-and the world should see that by the glory God bestows on God, the joy in our hearts, the new song on our lips each day and the favor that we are blessed with every day of our lives. Finally, we should be full of the Holy Spirit. We should express the characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit without any struggle: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness and self-control.

What a prescription! In a world such as ours, it is difficult to stand out for God but thank God for His grace. All we have to do is to strengthen ourselves in His grace and He will take it from there. So, let’s get dressed! Let’s manifest God in our dressing! And believe me, someone will find God because you dressed well.

  1. Indeed we should not follow fads, not labor to please the world with our looks, but humble ourselves each day when we rise and seek to be the light that shines brighter than all others, so that all who see want to be a part of our humble attitudes, and then want to seek out what has cause our Spirit’s light to shine…the Lord God Almighty! Very good message
